Crew Member Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Backlash Following Journey
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a social media post, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.
She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the mission, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The group of women also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
The company behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a Amazon founder.
